Floating Tricksters SYNOPSIS
In 1817, John Jacob Astor’s fur and opium empire helped spur construction of the Erie Canal causing enough economic growth to transform New York City into America's financial capital. The local faerie community, which had lived among the Lenape tribe for thousands of years, sensed the great challenge that lay ahead. The Faerie folk saw the commissioner's plan of 1811 with its imposing street grid and barely an acre set aside for natural preservation, and immediately went to work visiting the dreams of city officials, planting seeds that would grow into the creation of a sprawling central park.
Without an oasis of natural beauty, within the heart of a city that would eventually overflow with factories and commerce, the little people reasoned, humans would surely suffer unimaginable consequences. They also needed a suitable home insulated from the overstimulating machinations of city life. Locations and designs for ten archetypal faerie villages were selected and their underground construction completed long before ground was broken on the park project in 1857. It would take another twenty years to build central park, but the faeries did not mind. They took pleasure in discovering ways to influence the park’s architects in order to ensure the inclusion of features which pleased them.
They were not as successful in mitigating the global ambitions of the city's wealthy elite. Yet regardless of what occurs, faeries always keep their spirits high and their trust of life intact. They accept that humans are an autonomous species, free to follow or ignore the guidance provided by their invisible friends.
Our story begins on a snow-swept winter day when a young boy and girl, who live on opposite sides of the park, experience their first encounter with the little people. Henry Moore, asks his father to take him for a sleigh ride through the park. A young faerie named Undine, who inspired Henry, tags along for the ride. At the time, Linda Flavian who was walking with her Irish nanny, Mary Kate, through the park, notices Undine riding on Henry’s knee. The two families are eventually guided by faeries to form an alliance that will imperceptibly alter the course of human history.
